Hello. I'm 28 and I have a problem with my family. They hate my boyfriend. My mom does not get along with my dad and says she sees my boyfriend exactly like my father was when he was younger. She really resents my boyfriend and nothing that he ever does is good. This has been going on for a long long time now and it keeps getting worse to the point that she told me if i want to keep seeing him I'm done with her for good. My brother also does not like him and of course that now my boyfriend resents them too. I don't know what to do, I feel stuck in the middle, I can't give up on my boyfriend but I can't give up on my family either...

@everydaysame I hate to be the one to say this but....I agree with your Mom.

If he cannot handle you during a depressive episode he will eventually begin to resent you. If and when you do decide to spend the rest of your life with someone, all of your needs must be met, regardless if the need is during the bad times. If he cannot support you, help you through your depressive episodes, he will begin to resent you. You will begin to resent him and eventually you will see everything your mom is saying.

As far as you paying rent, money, etc...everyone handles the house overhead differently. I would not want to live anywhere rent free. I have always paid my own way, regardless if it was just paying a water bill... I paid my way. Pay your way. But that is how I look at sharing household responsibilities.
