@Starlover81 most people don’t know they have it, because the symptoms are relatively minor. So it is possible that you have had it for 7 years and not known it. If you are within about 3 weeks from initial exposure, you can take an IGM and an IGG test. The igm antibodies are the first to show up, the igg antibodies show up later. Therefore, if you have a positive igm, but negative igg, that indicates a recent infection. If you have a strong igg response, that indicates an infection more than 4-6 weeks old. The igg antibodies stay in your system permanently. If you’re worried about your partner, he can also get a blood test.

So a recent infection means something happened recently? Or just presented itself after all these years?

@Starlover81 yes, a recent infection means you got infected recently. An existing infection can outbreak years or decades later, on average three times per year. Although the symptoms may be so benign that it is not noticeable. It is often times hard to pinpoint an infection date, or who gave it to whom. If you have been seeing the same guy for 7 years, and you have hsv-2 genitally, there is a pretty good chance he has it too, and you may never know who came into the relationship with it. Obviously, there is another scenario that you or he contracted it recently from another encounter.
