Today is a good day to have a good day

Upon waking up, the instant your brain starts firing, decide in that moment, today is my day, it is a good day and I have decided no matter what happens it will still be a good day. Having a good day is a choice. If you are one of those rare people who wake up happy and beaming, good for you! I am officially jealous and/or disgusted, maybe both, because I have to make an effort every Single day to try and wake up and set a positive outlook goal for the day. I don't bound out of bed, I sit and convince myself to get a grip and get my workout clothes on and get a move on.

I suggest before getting up and before you go to sleep that you take a few seconds to set a positive intention for the day or night ahead. It may sound very new agey, but I assure you, it is a best practice for life. I deal with a lot of anxiety and when I lay down at night I start going through a list of worries, basically worst case scenarios and I have found that answering myself with, ‘well what happens if that happens,’ deflates my anxiety in one foul swoop. I highly recommend it, imagining the worse, who would've thought that would help?! For me it takes fear out the equation.

“The role of anxiety in the development of human personality is central, and it is intricate beyond our understanding.”
Timothy Leary

We are often so paralyzed by fear that it creates this gray cloud above our head, we feel so incapable and stuck, progress seems impossible, but that is a lie we tell ourselves. It is so far from the truth, progress forward is always possible! People who have been through horrific experiences can live amazing and powerful lives, that in and of itself proves that life is truly what you make of it! Don’t believe me, just google any hard knock story and look at the person who is being written about, at some point their story will go something like this, they decide that no matter that they are now disfigured by acid, maimed by a bomb, living with a debilitating illness, grieving the loss of someone they love...they get to a point where they make a conscious choice to start living again, to see the sun again, to find joy again in life. They stop grieving their loss and they start finding ways to truly live again.

“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.”
George Bernard Shaw

If you feel like there is no joy in your life and everyday is just bad, find a way to inject some joy in your life, the best way to do this is through service. Find people who are either in a worse situation or in the same situation as yourself and give of your time and/or money. There is no better way to find your joy than helping someone else find theirs! Pack some care packages for soldiers, the homeless, cancer patients, teachers...on each bag write a quote or encouraging statement, hand them out and see how this impacts your day and theirs, hopefully for the better.

“Believe in Your Heart
Believe in your heart that you're meant to live a life full of passion, purpose, magic and miracles.”
Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart

All of us are meant to have a good life and while I say that and believe it wholeheartedly, it is so hard to hold on to that belief when you are sick, your kids are sick, bad things are happening and yet, there are still wonderful things to hold onto, whatever those things are, hold them tight:
A kind compliment from a stranger
A random gift from a friend
Takeout when you just can’t cook another night
A hug from your child
Kindness and love from your spouse after a particularly trying day

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”
Viktor E. Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning

Today and everyday, choose your attitude and your guiding mantra carefully, choose to be positive, kind, loving and strong, because it takes way more muscles to frown than smile!

Wishing you all the best-Team SG
