Taking care of our Mental and Physical Health during a Pandemic

Sometimes it seems like we are in the middle of a weird end of times biopic. Movies and TV shows are like viewing a historical record, OMG, people are touching, they are shaking hands, they are kissing each other's cheek, no masks, crowds, concerts, dining out, it all seems like a beautiful dream! Reality on the other hand seems stark at best, but like the adaptable people we are, we press on. No Trick or Treating seems utterly bonkers, but so does catching or spreading COVID-19 over getting free candy. Reality is way more scary than a Haunted House ever was or will ever be!

That is a trick of human nature. We get used to things.

This week we would like to focus on reminding each other, that regardless of the fact that we are living through a pandemic, we still need to perform our yearly exams. We need to schedule eye exams, mammograms, colonoscopies, dentist exams and ladies and those who were born female at birth, need to remember to do their monthly breast check. These yearly or biannual exams are too important to push off because of the pandemic. Flu Season is also right around the corner and getting your Flu Shot is very, very important! We completely understand that everything takes longer right now, but our health cannot be put on hold.

Healthy citizens are the greatest asset any country can have.

Our mental health is also, so incredibly important and while a lot of therapists are still doing online appointments and that may not be ideal, it is really essential to continue your therapy, either in person or online. There are a lot of purely online therapy apps that offer very affordable packages and for those who wish to therapist shop, this could actually be an ideal situation. You are not tethered to one therapist and your payments are static, having your sessions from home could also alleviate a lot of the fear and stress you might have when going to an in person office visit.

What mental health needs is more sunlight, more candor, and more unashamed conversation.

We are in a constant state of flux, our world as we once knew it is ever changing and not in a fun and interesting way. Change isn’t always easy, but together, we are going to get through this time in history, better and stronger. We are going to look out for one another, because that is what good people do and you all are the best there is! Others may not understand our need for rehab, recovery, medication, therapy, counseling and support, they may question you or even aim to put you down. Look them straight in the eye and tell them that you are a SuperHero in the flesh and well, those who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones, basically, know your worth. We need these things in our life and while petty insults hurt, don't ever allow anyone to belittle what you have gone through and the path you are on!

There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t.
