My Life

Birthdays and holidays make us introspective, we start thinking about life, our own lives specifically.  These passage of time markers seem to come back around faster and faster each year!  Every year we make goals, some of us write them out, some of us mark them on calendars and journals, and some of us just file them away mentally.  Goals regarding education, life events, travel, mental health, physical health...we set them and often forget them, until we reach another birthday, holiday or life milestone and suddenly we remember to look back over the last few months to see if we have progressed.  Have we fulfilled any of our goals, have we even started?

So often goals seem like planning a big party, the end result is amazing, but the time getting the party from ideas to fruition is a lot of work and effort.  Goals don’t have to be overwhelming, if for example your overall goal is to manage your physical health better, you can break this umbrella goal into manageable pieces.  

  • Go to insurance website and find a list of approved Doctors and PAs
  • Call and schedule an appointment
  • Go over concerns and health goals with medical professional
  • Do blood work and necessary tests
  • Allow Doctor to help you set manageable steps to achieving your overall health goal

Here is another example: every morning when you wake up, your closet is a horror, you can’t find anything, you are always late leaving the house, you want to organize, but it seems incredibly overwhelming.

  • Set aside a day off and clean out the closet, set up several boxes, trash goes in one, regular donations another, and anything suit or work appropriate can go to a shelter or an organization such as Dress for Success 
  • Schedule pickups for donation boxes
  • Pick items and shelving that will work in your space or contract these services through a company such as The Container Store or Ikea
  • Figure out how you want your space to work, this is not for an Instagram perfect picture, this is for you and how your life works-plan accordingly 
  • Plan 15-20 minutes, 2-3 times a week to hang everything up that has been washed or dry cleaned, to place your shoes back where they belong and to throw all the wash in the basket.

Our goals to learn to play piano or to find a therapist can all be broken down into manageable bits as well.  Small, manageable steps are way less intimidating to accomplish as opposed to trying to cross things off your list in one rather intimidating swoop.

Plans, goals, change are incredibly hard for a lot of us, we have grown used to failure and disappointment, we have come to terms with things not turning out.  We have to learn how to change the narrative, to quiet the naysayers that live in our head.  The past might not have turned out like we wished, but that doesn’t mean the present and the future can’t.  Consider why you began to give up on your dreams?  Because other people told you to and you stopped believing you could?  Dare to dream again!

Our goals may shift and change, perhaps our body is not meant to be the size or weight that you set for it, maybe a health condition is long term and isn’t curable, maybe our perfect therapist moves or retires, instead of giving up, we adapt or start over.  We shift our mindset from perfection to attainable.  We commend ourselves when things go well and allow ourselves to grieve when they don’t, but regardless of the outcome, we don’t give up.

Be a dreamer, be a planner, believe in yourself as much as you believe in your favorite team, in the joy that coffee brings in the morning, in the reality that eating your favorite ice cream will soothe your tears, that wearing your lucky shirt is in fact lucky!  Be bold believers in yourself and your life!  You are amazing!  You are worthy!  You deserve good things!
