Into the Unknown

Our title probably has you belting out the “Frozen” tune right about now and while the movie and songs were amazing, we want to focus on something a bit deeper. Where do we go from here, here being 2 days after the George Floyd trial where his murderer, a cop, was held accountable, something that doesn’t happen as often as it should. In the court of law, jurors have to be convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant is guilty and deserving of a verdict proclaiming that. Our hearts are heavy, we have spent the last year mourning so much death and loss. Deaths from COVID, deaths caused by mass murder, deaths caused by hateful individuals and hateful cops. Operating under this amount of sadness and grief is emotionally tough because of the relentlessness of the situation.

If you are reading and are thinking, SG, enough with the social tragedy, this is a support site! We ask you to take a moment and consider, isn’t part of support processing what is going on in the world around us and learning to be better allies and supporters? Our answer is, YES! Additionally, we would ask you to check your privilege, literally.

•Have you ever feared being pulled over by a cop?
•Have you ever had a gun pointed at you by a cop?
•Have you ever been followed around by mall security?
•Have you ever been denied your dream wedding venue because of your sexual orientation?
•Have you ever been put on school suspension for painting your nails?
•Sent home because your clothes were deemed provocative?
•Were you ever scared to walk home alone because you feared you might not make it back home alive?
•Were you ever denied being part of a sport’s team because of your birth certificate?
•Told to go back where you came from?
•Blamed for 9/11, the Coronavirus, Aids, the downfall of society?
•Feared for your family’s safety every time today’s version of Nazis marched freely and wore shirts that displayed names of Concentration Camps and anti-Semite slogans?

If you can answer no to all of these, we would venture a guess you are a cisgendered, straight, white male. And there is NOTHING wrong with that, except you are historically hailed as perfection, the master race and the ones who generations ago made most of the laws we must follow today. Which either makes you the perfect ally or morally apathetic and therefore, part of the problem, in this, there is no middle ground.

Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are. -Benjamin Franklin

We are not calling on any of you to leave your homes and march, we are not even asking you to call your Representatives and Senators, because for a lot of people, anxiety and fear would prevent them from being able to do this. No shame in that whatsoever. Whatever you can do, do and do it to the best of your ability. When someone says or posts something racist, homophobic, anti woman, transphobic, or hateful, call them out on it, or at the very least, tell them to please not use that language around you because you will not tolerate it.

Remember: It's not your fault that things are the way they are, but it is your responsibility to do something about them. -Elena Aguilar

We can’t change millennia of social injustice, police injustice, homophobia, hate, etc. in a day, or even hundreds of days, but we can make incremental progress, small change collectively brings about big change. We can do little things like put up a yard sign espousing your feelings on science being real, love is love, black lives matter, women's rights are human rights and no human should be illegal. You could put up a rainbow flag for Gay Pride. You could volunteer, support another person going through a rough time, speak up against hate, post on social media regarding your views, vote, encourage others to vote, and turn up for those in need.

Not everything that is faced can be changed. But nothing can be changed until it is faced.
-James Baldwin

The future can and must be better, we must learn from the mistakes of the past and determine not to continually repeat history. We can be the generation of change, lasting change, the future is unknown and unwritten. Work towards a finale that brings people to their feet with cheers of, we did it, things got better, we did better!

Wishing everyone all the very best-SG
