First proper CBT session today and it was somewhat underwhelming. I have been told it starts slow and very basic and gradually increases the intensity as you go along. I feel like nothing was achieved. I did not get to say everything I wanted because of the time constraints and likewise the responses I got to the things I said did not fill me with confidence. I felt like I got generic sympathetic responses which were not that useful to me. She gave me another homework assignment which did look far more interesting. The questions for the next assignemnt require me to probe a little deeper into my issues which hopefully means she will give me more meaningful insight and responses in my next session. Have 2 weeks to think and dwell on things until I see her again. I also think I projected a more cheery persona than is the case because I happen to be on diazepam for a back injury at the moment. Although I did mention that to her and I assume she takes things like that into consideration. So I have left the session not fully knowing what to think of it. Time will tell I guess.

Thanks haha. Yeah, just try your best. Therapists are trained to pull from other theories if CBT is not working for you. Also, it takes time to build a relationship with a therapist. Don't give up hope yet.

@Christian23 No, I'm in the US, but I'm actually part of a similar program that is government funded. The first therapist I was referred to didn't work out and at first I was upset. But then I took the time to search psychologytoday.com and found a therapist closer to my age (younger and perhaps educated on the latest techniques) who I can relate to more and is just kinder. I know it is easy to think "maybe it is me", I know I did. However, it is really about the relationship, both client and therapist. I just want you to know there are alternatives (I wish someone had told me). Just like you would get a doctor's second opinion, if you decide later to switch therapists you may find one that is more helpful. This is your mental health so it's essential that you get the best help you can for you! :)

@bbccddee1234 should have guessed most people are US based here. Time difference means getting an urgent response can be inconvenient lol. Maybe I should join the insomniac group to get around that. I do not connect or trust people so I therapy is interesting but I am glad I took the first step, I have know I needed therapy for a decade and ignored it. Thanks for your help, means a lot :)
