DIET & NUTRITION: Finding an oncology nutritionist, part II

To clarify: it's common to use the terms nutritionist and dietician interchangeably, but they are not synonymous.

THE NUTRITIONIST

Regardless of experience or education, pretty much anyone can call themselves a 'nutritionist'.

THE DIETICIAN

This isn't true for a dietician, specifically a registered dietician (RD).

In order to carry the RD title, dieticians must be authorized by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association, which requires RDs to have at least a Bachelor's Degree and to have fulfilled certain professional requirements specified by the ADA.

Example: Tinrin Chew, RD, CSO. This means she is both a registered dietician (RD) and Board Certified in Oncology Nutrition (CSO).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

- For more information on an RD's qualifications, see the ADA's FAQ page.
