I'm a new person at this support group. My name is Cynthia and I have a 6 year old who was diagnosed with mild autism at age 3 and is a picky eater. He will not eat your average daily meaI.It's funny because when he was much younger he would eat almost everything and all of a sudden he has a sudden change in eating. Right now what he eats are snacks such as whole grain fish crackers, yogurt, granola bars, pop tarts. We think that it is because he may have trouble with texture. Therapists have told us the same thing too. Recently we took him to a neurologist and they prescribed this medication that will increase his appetite that is called " RESPIRADOL" ...we are kind of iffy about this med...we are not sure if it is the right thing to do. Can anyone here give me any type of advice of any if this type of medication would be the right way to goo...or if any one has had any bad experiences or side effects with this medication????? HELP !
I don't have any personal experience with the medication, but as a mom of two girls that have fluctuated from the most open and amazing eaters to the most amazing picky eaters, it may partially be just an average stage. I would suggest seeing if he would like shakes, you can add milk, protien powder, nut butter, fruit, etc. (my girls love it). Also try to sneak things in to foods he likes, pureed fruit into his yogurt, make your own granola bars and add chopped fruit, if you likes the shakes, try adding spinach and beets in small amounts, it isn't sneaky-it is extremely smart!
Hope this might help!
Hi clopez60632. I haven't heard of the medication that you mentioned, but I can definitely sympathize with your story! My daughter, who is 10, is an extremely picky eater, and it is also nearly impossible to get her to eat dinner at the table with us. If you're interested, there's some advice about eating habits and autism at http://onlineceucredit.com/edu/social-work-ceus-fl. We're working on her habits, but it's a gradual, slow process.
Hi I'm new to this as well. I posted about my son lol anyways I've took the med and I WOULD NOT give it to my child or anyone else. I had bad trips is what the dr called it. My son is the same way as your child. I started buying the flavored shakes for him that's in the pharmacy He does great with them and the dr told us it has everything he needs in it. I've also gave my son v~8 juice and he drinks a glass a day of it. I hope it helps.
