Overprotective Parents

I am 14 and my parents are overprotective my friends compare them to hitler and encourage me to run away from them. First off they have a billion rules that result in severe consequences if not followed. I am not allowed to have a television in my room because they think i will watch bad stuff, I am not allowed to watch certain channels either like MTV VH1 MTV2 or Comedy Central. I am not allowed to my glamour magazine subscription that was a gift from my aunt for my conformation. I cant go to the mall without a parent I cant even ride my bike to the park thats 1/4 of a mile down the street. I cant use the webcam on my laptop nor can i use my laptop to study in my bedroom. I cant eat Lunchables for God Sakes! I cant use my computer or watch TV for more than 2 hours a day. I have to do chores the entire day saturday and sometimes sunday. I cook, clean, do laundry, wash dishes and iron and they don't even notice they just yell at me because i didn't do something more.
I have to volenteer the whole summer because i am not allowed to be home. They also try to control every aspect of my life. They hate my friends and try to get me to make new ones, when I say The Killers are my favorite artists my mom says no there not Taylor Swift is! Its like I don't have a say in my own life. I am a straight A student and do a ton of stuff but they never loosen up they just get more rigid as i get older. Aren't I supposed to get more privileges as i grow older. If something doesn't give I am going to run away.

Hi ovrprotected, Believe me you are not having to suffer as the people did for what Hitler did to them. Read the stories of the Holocaust survivors. I think they would have much preferred to stay with your parents and do what you are doing. Now with that said, be glad that you parents care enough to be concerned about you.

If you were to run away, where would you run to? How would you support yourself? You are 14. Believe me, it is a big scary, world out there. How do you think your parents would feel if you ran away?

I ran away from home when I was 17. I was gone for a couple of days. Believe me, I was glad my mother allowed me to come back home. I was glad to get back home when I did and do whatever my mother said. It wasn't as bad at home as I thought it was. It was alot worse being out on my own.

The grass always looks greener on the other side until we get there. Is it possible for you to talk to your parents? To your mom or dad?

Alot of times parents do these things because of THEIR past experiences (probably bad ones too)so try to consider that, doesnt mean they shouldnt lighten up on you, but if you were to run away you'd be the one in great deal of hurt & another casuality of our system, my friends did this when I was 12, I didnt go w/them, their now 54 & had nothing but a trail of misfortunes in life from people they directly/indirectly brought into their lives to other addictive behaviors etc.... trust us, you dont want to go that way w/this situation. Try & communicate w/one or both of them, not all at once w/how you feel, but rather whats up w/them a lil at a time, open thoses doors, you might learn whats going on with all the rules...

Do tell us how you're doing.

April

hon

u just gotta face it parents are weird. (i no cos i am one)

they are frightened that u are growing up in a world that they are having problems relating too,

years ago when south park came out we told our boys they couldnt watch it but after some discussion it was agreed we would all watch it to see what it was all about, to be honest it wasnt all that bad it was just the thought and the buzz words "kill kenny" that were the stumbling block.

do u not have a relative who can help u mediate with them to find some reasonable common ground, but choose your choices very carefully dont jump in with a big one settle for several little ones to show u are still alive right side up and trustworthy

at the end of the day u will not be a child forever but they bless them will always b parents, and believe it or not others would kill to have over fussy parents like yours in their lives

as always

loving thoughts and positive vibes
