I dont know what to do anymore..
Well this is my first entry and i am new to this site. I had no idea where else to turn. I am 20 years old and going to school and working full time and struggling with all of these family issuses going on. My mother has been an alcoholic for as long as i can remember and on top of it all she is disabled and cannot walk well so drinking does not help the situation. The only other person i had to talk to was my dad untill last year he got depressed about my mom and everything else going on in life. He now has no job and feels like he is worthless. He has no motivation to get help and i have tried to motivate him and he just wont budge. Now, both of my parents sit here in the house in seperate rooms and drink from the time they get up to the time they go to bed. They have both been in the hospital before to try and get help and nothing is working. On top of it all my brother just recently moved back to Michigan and he is 26. No job, No money and no place to live so i am trying to help him out as much as i can along with trying to take care of myself and succeed in life. It is so hard to stay positive about all of this and try and be happy. I have no idea what to do anymore!
You might want to see if there are any CODA meetings in your area; it would be helpful to talk face-to-face with people that struggle with drawing the same line you are struggling with, the line between taking care of yourself by loving you, and taking care of yourself by loving those around you. That's how I feel that line inside me, anyway, and you have a whole bunch of stuff going on, the more people you can talk to and find support with the better. In fact, you have so much going, on you might need to form an Exit Strategy just like Obama! And while I'd like to think that was kinda witty, in your situation it's probably much more accurate than witty. If you're going to school full-time and working full-time you have the capacity to plan this exit too. Check out CODA oh and geez -- you can go to all of the drug/alcohol Anonymous meetings and hear right from the people you are living with how to best love and help them.
Hi Audrey, Your parents have to be willing to help themselves. You may want to check out Alanon and ACOA for support for yourself. There are also links on intervention that you can look into. I know it is hard living with them and seeing the downward spiral. But as long as they are alive and breathing, there is hope for them. Keep coming and sharing with us. We are here for you. ((((hugs))))
hi my life seems so similar to yours it's crazy. My dad was the alcoholic but he sneaked it. He used to drive me and my brother around while drunk and we didn't even know until he finally admitted he had a problem. My parents yelled, fight cause when my father would get drunk he would yell at start in with my brother. One point he stole our rent money and we didnt even get anything for christmas and it hurt my mom i could tell. My mother told my father if he continued she would get a divorce and he stopped after many times relapsing. My mom is in a serious depression also after what my father put us threw and not long ago my grandpa her father passed away. I tell you as a daughter of a alcoholic make them seek help don't hate them cause they have history and a reason for doing this. Make your mother see why this is hurting you lay it all out on the table and get your dad and mom to a therapist because lets face it they need help just like my parents. I hoped i helped and i hope you know your not alone.

Audrey-
Welcome to supportgroups.com, I'm sorry to read about your family's situation. I'm guessing that you live at home with both your parents and now your brother as well. While I understand your desire to help them all, you have to understand that you have only so much ability to help them- beyond that, they must help themselves. In the meantime, you shouldn't disregard your own happiness or your own future and assume that the happiness of the entire family is your responsibility and yours alone. It isn't, and it can't be. So I hope you're taking care of yourself- your needs, emotions, goals, etc- as this all unfolds around you.
K
