Bankruptcy saga

I had a great job for 29 years and then was forced into early retirement. During that time I lived way above my means, but it was transparent since I had a good income and could keep current on bills. Twice, my mother bailed me out of financial ruin following a divorce. I did pay her back, interest free.

I grew up with deprivation issues. We were a family of 9 kids so even though you might not have called us "poor", luxuries, as you might guess were scarce. Also I didn't really FEEL loved. I began to steal at an early age, even then living way ahead of my means.

I lost the good job and got another menial job that paid more than minimum wage, but still paultry in comparison. I managed to stay afloat.

Six months ago, though my husband was in a serious motorcycle wreck, crushed his right leg. He has had surgery after surgery and lost his business. He had extensive credit problems there as well. His were in arears, dreadfully. We found out that he did have a personal liability to those creditors. We have no choice other than bankruptcy.

I lost my job a year ago and have collected unemployment since then and get a small pension. It doesn't cover expenses much less gas, utilities, cell phone, internet...etc.

They totalled the motorcycle and that pay out has subsidized our income for almost 6 months. That money is running out.

I stay true to my faith and pull it back into the moment when I find myself stressed/worried. Today everything is current and I am comfortable.

God blessed us with free food through our church and someone gave us $100. When the accident happened, money did pour in for awhile from well wishers. I have to TRUST that God is working this to my good somehow.

That was a long saga.

The hearing is over. We should be finalized mid January. Now I have no job, my husband was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in May so he can't work. I've always had those credit cards to bail me out of these tight squeezes but that is what got me into this mess was spending money I didn't have.

Have you made any progress here? The media has talked a lot about a recovery, but none of the folks I know who lost their jobs in the past year have got a new one yet. Hopefully, new jobs can get created in 2010 driven by real growth, not just government stimulus.

No, no progress as far as the job market goes. I haven't really been that aggressive in my search. I am collecting unemployment and have done enough looking to satisfy their requirements.
